Groombridge St. Thomas CE Primary School

Dear Parents and Carers,

As you may already be aware, in September 2105 a new National Curriculum was introduced, bringing in some significant differences to the way children are assessed. This year things will be different. Levels have gone. Your child will no longer be assessed as a level 2a or 5c etc as they don’t exist. The curriculum for English (reading – word reading and comprehension and writing – transcription, composition, vocabulary, grammar and punctuation and spelling), and for mathematics is now organised by Years, 1 to 6; and there is a clear expectation that children will master the requirements of each by the end of that academic The new curriculum is also harder than the last one. For example many of the knowledge, skills and understanding in maths that would typically have been taught in Year 4 under the old curriculum are now expected to be taught and mastered in Year 3 or some even Year 2.

Children will be tested at the end of each key stage (Class 2 and Class 6) with the new assessments reflecting the more challenging content and concepts of the 2014 curriculum. As in previous years, we will endeavour to ensure that children are adequately prepared so that they can feel confident and at ease when completing the various tests.

For more information, please take a moment to watch the videos below, the arrangements have not changed.
