This page will be updated with a letter from the new Chair of Governors Mr Thomas Swan, elected at the FGB meeting 27/9/18

Please note that this Governance section is currently being updated.

When you step inside Groombridge St Thomas’ School you will know you are in a very special place. Look around you. The atmosphere is warm and welcoming, the children are happy, their stunning colourful artwork adorns the walls of every corridor and classroom.

Our leadership, teaching staff and administrators are a close knit, highly experienced and dedicated team who have created a wonderful environment in which every child can learn. Our teaching standards and academic record have earned us overall ‘Outstanding’ Ofsted and Diocesan Inspections  and the school is continually seeking to improve and move forward with a shared vision. Our relationship with the parish church, St Thomas the Apostle, is closely reflected in the strong Christian ethos which pervades the school. Listen - and you will hear the focused buzz of learning. A well-resourced library, together with a much used music room, ICT suite, interactive classroom whiteboards and up-dated playgrounds are testament to the school’s commitment to provide the finest possible facilities for every child in our care - and our desire to build for the future through sound financial management - in spite of the dramatic reduction in government funding for education over recent years.

Our after-school and out of school activities are varied and seasonal. STACC, the St Thomas Arts & Crafts Club, transforms children’s creative work into merchandise marketed by the children to parents and friends, raising funds for a range of special projects. The popular lunch time Gardening Club works in the Creation Garden growing flowers, fruits and vegetables. Our after-school Computer Club helps to develop children’s ICT skills. In Music and Drama, children learn to play the recorder, piano, violin, guitar and drums, can sing in the school choir and participate in our annual nativity play, pantomime and other drama events. On the sporting front, soccer, netball, tag rugby, hockey and cross country running are just a few of the many activities provided for. Seasonal sports clubs contribute to the schools’ participation and success in local leagues over the years. We now have access to the excellent sporting facilities nearby at The Tanyard where a new sports pavilion has recently been opened for the benefit of the school and village community.

Many resources in school would not have been possible but for the incredible support the school receives from the School Association – led by parents and in partnership with the school - whose fund raising activities throughout the year bring the school, children, parents and local community closer together. The School Association organises many fund raising events - such as the Groombridge Village May Fair and a variety of activities for the entertainment of the children, parents and the community at large. Their fun and fund raising efforts really do make a difference and benefit every child in school.

Groombridge St Thomas is a small school with a big heart. Our children raise money for many charitable causes, paying for the education of two young children in Brazil, supporting the Romanian Shoe Box appeal,  giving generously at Harvest time to the needy in our community’, entertaining residents of the village at the senior citizens Christmas lunch and raising money for various national and local charities. It is a great personal privilege to be Chair of Governors at Groombridge St Thomas School. Our Governing body comprises a wealth of experience and energy, drawing on the talents of individuals from the school, church and village. We are all immensely proud of the schools’ achievements under the leadership of our Headteacher Ms Angela Nicholls and are dedicated to its ongoing success.
